FAQs

SHIPPING AND DELIVERY

Why can't certain items be delivered to me?

While ETHOS delivers internationally, the brands on our website can determine where their items are distributed — so some may not be available to order in all regions. Some items may also be restricted by local customs in the country you are sending to. If you have any questions, contact our global Customer Service team.

How much will I be charged for delivery?

This varies depending on the size, weight and destination of your chosen items. The good news is we offer One Delivery Fee for orders above a certain threshold – this means you can order multiple pieces from multiple locations for one fee. You'll see the delivery fee at the checkout.

Does my order require a signature upon delivery?

Yes, we ask for a signature to make sure your jewelry arrives safely.

Is my order insured in transit?

Your package is fully insured while in transit! If you are having an issue with the delivery of your package, please reach out to hello@ETHOS.com for assistance.

Do you deliver to PO Box addresses?

Unfortunately not, as we require a signature upon delivery for all orders.

Where can I find a status update on my order?

You can find an estimated ship by date within your order confirmation email. We're unable to provide any other details throughout the production process, but we will certainly be in touch if we are experiencing any delays.

Can I change/cancel my order?

We can change or cancel your order as long as it hasn’t been shipped. Contact us with your order number as soon as you can.

Can I choose a specific ship date for my made to order design?

We provide an estimated ship by date and are unable to expedite the production process, as every design is crafted to last a lifetime. As soon as your order is ready, you'll receive a shipment confirmation email with tracking.

We apologize, but customers do not have the option to choose a ship date. If you won't be home or available to sign for your package, we suggest creating a FedEx Delivery Manager account (which is free to sign up!). Once you receive tracking information, and the package is in transit, you can log into your account and re-route your package to another address, or a FedEx location. Please keep in mind, making any adjustments to your shipping address may add a few business days to the delivery of your package, and FedEx will charge a fee for the address change.

How are duties and taxes handled?

If your order is shipping to the UK, US or EU, we include all duties and taxes in the final price so you won’t have to pay for anything separately or on arrival.

If you’re ordering to another country, you may have to pay taxes and duties upon delivery.

LAB GROWN DIAMONDS | CREATED DIAMONDS

1. What is a natural diamond?

A “natural” diamond is another name for a mined diamond. Officially, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) defines a diamond as “A mineral consisting essentially of pure carbon crystallised in the isometric system.” Whether a diamond is mined or created, both share this chemical composition. The difference and designation between lab-grown and mined diamonds lie in the way in which it is created. Titles like “lab-grown” and “mined” designate origin. Mined diamonds are extracted from Earth through complex pit, underground, or alluvial methods, and utilise heavy machinery as well as an extensive amount of labour. To distract consumers from the human and environmental toll of these methods, some in the diamond industry have begun to call their diamonds “natural.” The term is for marketing purposes only, and does not make a mined diamond atomically different from its lab-grown counterpart.

2. What Are Lab Grown Diamonds?

Lab grown diamonds (also known as lab created diamonds, man made diamonds, engineered diamonds, and cultured diamonds) are grown in highly controlled laboratory environments using advanced technological processes that duplicate the conditions under which diamonds naturally develop when they form in the mantle, beneath the Earth’s crust. These lab created diamonds consist of actual carbon atoms arranged in the characteristic diamond crystal structure. Since they are made of the same material as natural diamonds, they exhibit the same optical and chemical properties.

3. Are lab-grown diamonds real?

Yes. Lab grown diamonds are chemically and physically identical, both starting as carbon seeds and pressurised to life. In fact, the Federal Trade Commission recently changed the definition of a diamond by removing the word natural and the GIA grades them the same way.

4. Are lab-grown diamonds the same as mined diamonds?

Lab-grown diamonds are physically the same as mined diamonds. Created diamonds are made by replicating the way diamonds are made in nature without the negative environmental or human toll of mining. The difference between lab-grown and natural diamonds could be compared to the difference between ice formed outside on a winter’s day versus ice that’s formed inside your refrigerator.

5. Do lab created diamonds test as real?

Created diamonds test as real because they're made of crystallised carbon, just as mined diamonds are. And just like minded diamonds, created diamonds are graded by independent gemological organizations on their cut, color, clarity and carat weight, also known as the 4Cs. Not all lab-grown diamonds are “perfect” — they will differ in color and quality, just as a mined diamond would.

6. Are lab-grown diamonds GIA certified?

Yes. Lab grown diamonds are graded on cut, clarity, colour and carat, just the same as mined diamonds. The GIA (Gemological Institute of America) and IGI (International Gemological Institute) are the key institutions to grade and issue certificates for lab diamonds.

7. How are lab grown diamonds graded?

Lab-grown diamonds can be graded in the same way as mined diamonds, by assessing the 4C’s of diamond quality: Cut, Color, Carat, Clarity. The GIA and IGI both offer dedicated reports using the same grading process as mined diamonds, whilst also specifying their origin as lab-grown.

8. How can you tell if they are lab created diamonds?

You can’t. Even specialist gemologists and seasoned diamond traders cannot tell the difference between lab grown and mined diamonds with the naked eye, it takes specialist magnifying equipment that looks at the structure of atoms to notice any differences.

9. How do you identify lab-grown diamonds?

Only a specialist with the right equipment can tell the difference between a lab-grown diamond and a natural stone.

10. Can I insure a lab grown diamonds?

Yes! Just like a mined diamond, laboratory grown diamonds can be insured. In fact, by choosing a lab-grown diamond, you'll not only save money on the diamond itself, but you'll also save money on the annual premium of the insurance policy due to the lower overall cost of the insurable piece.

11. How to buy Lab Grown Diamonds?

At ETHOS, we specialise in jewellery made with Lab-Grown Diamonds. Everything we offer is discovered and reviewed by our team and approved by our customers. We are committed to garnering customer trust with everything we do. Feel confident that you’re selecting the perfect diamond jewellery for a loved one when you consult our renowned experts online or visit our showroom or store. We are a business in which best in class permeates all aspects of our company. We measure our success by the quality of our team.

12. How are lab-grown diamonds made?

There are a few methods used to create lab-grown diamonds. Typically, lab-grown diamonds start with a tiny lab diamond, like a seed. The seeds are placed in a chamber called a plasma reactor (in the case of CVD synthesis) or a large mechanical press (if manufactured by HPHT). Then, depending on the technology used, some combination of heat, pressure and a carbon source are used to make the crystals grow, layer by layer.

13. Will lab grown diamonds pass a diamond tester?

Lab-grown diamonds have the same physical properties as mined stones, so will be categorized as ‘diamond’ when using a diamond tester pen. This relies on the accuracy of the equipment used, and it being used correctly, so it’s best to consult with a specialist. Specialist equipment that goes beyond a diamond testing pen can always correctly identify the difference between a lab-grown diamond and a mined stone.

14. Are lab-grown diamonds better for the environment?

There are always going to be questions and doubts around new ideas. The most common misconception about lab grown diamonds is that they are not the same as mined. By now, we know that mining diamonds has huge consequences for our planet. Not only does it displace and disrupt the earth, but also the ecosystems and communities that surround mining regions.

15. Can I request that my diamond be graded by the GIA?

We are happy to send your diamond to GIA for grading. The non-refundable fee to do so is $375 USD. Please allow up to 3 weeks for processing. Once we receive the diamond back from GIA, we can proceed with the production of your ring.

Please keep in mind, while GIA is seen as the world’s foremost authority on diamond grading, the process is still a subjective science, and it is possible to have two GIA Graduate Gemologists have a difference of opinion when it comes to assigning a color or clarity grade. Color is assessed by looking through the pavilion of the diamond while it is face down using master stones to guide the gemologist. It is not uncommon for there to be a slight variation in the final grade allocated. Clarity is graded using 10x magnification either with a loupe or microscope. The clarity grade is based on a number of factors including the type, size, color, and location of the natural inclusion(s).

 16. Can I see a photograph of the diamond before I purchase it?

There are 360 videos available for all diamonds listed on the diamond table. This table can be found on the product page for any ring style, under the “select your diamond” tab. They are photographed under 10x magnification and provide an excellent up-close view of the diamond before choosing to set it in a ring, or purchase it loose.

17. Why are lab grown diamonds better than mined diamonds?

Lab grown diamond jewelry is becoming increasingly popular as people are becoming aware of the many benefits of these diamonds. They are very similar to natural diamonds, but some important differences exist. Here are some of the reasons why lab-grown diamonds are better than natural diamonds:

18. Why should I buy a lab grown diamond?

Better Value. Lab-grown are physically, chemically and optically the same as mined diamonds. They are so similar that, even when using a jewellery loupe, mined and lab created diamonds are almost impossible to tell apart. Much like mined diamonds, lab grown diamonds are priced based on their 4Cs characteristics. A lab-grown diamond costs about 30-40% less than a mined diamond of similar quality. This is because the supply of lab grown diamonds is not controlled by a few major diamond cartels, and the production process is more efficient. A growing number of diamond jewelry brands and retailers are using lab-grown diamonds in their jewelry and engagement rings, making them more widely available and affordable.

19. Lab grown diamonds are ethically produced?

Do you know what blood diamonds are? These are natural diamonds mined and sold during wars as a means of financing the conflict. Lab-grown diamonds are not associated with such human rights abuses and are produced in ethical conditions.

20. Lab grown diamonds are more eco-friendly?

Yes. Diamond mining can have a significant environmental impact. It involves digging large holes in the ground, disturbing local ecosystems, and releasing harmful toxins into the environment. The Mirny Diamond Mine in Russia is the biggest diamond mine in the world, and it has created a massive hole nearly a mile wide and half a mile deep. The same goes for Kimberley in South Africa, which has created an enormous crater. In contrast, lab grown diamonds are produced in controlled environments with minimal environmental impact.

21. Are lab grown diamonds cubic zirconia?

No, lab grown diamonds are not cubic zirconia. Cubic zirconia is an artificial gemstone that is made from zirconium oxide. It is often used as a diamond simulant because it has a similar appearance to diamonds. However, cubic zirconia is not a diamond and does not have the same physical and chemical properties.

5 REASONS TO CHOOSE LAB GROWN DIAMONDS

They have the same physical and chemical properties as mined diamonds. The best part about lab grown diamonds is that they have the same physical and chemical properties as mined diamonds. This means they are just as hard (a ten on the Mohs scale of hardness) and will last just as long. So, if you’re looking for a beautiful and durable diamond, a lab-grown diamond is a great option.

1. Lab grown diamonds are unique:

Just like natural diamonds, each lab grown diamond is unique. They come in various colors, including yellow, blue, pink, and red. And because they are created in a lab, you can be sure that your diamond is one of a kind. You can also get large diamond ring designs that otherwise would be unavailable with mined diamonds.

2. You can support new technology:

You are supporting new technology and innovation by choosing a lab-grown diamond. The diamond industry is changing, and lab grown diamonds are at the forefront of this change. Lab grown diamonds are also used in various industries, such as medicine and aerospace.

3. You can get a warranty:

Many companies that sell lab grown diamonds offer a warranty on their products. This is because they are confident in the quality of their diamonds. So, if you’re looking for a diamond with a warranty, a lab grown diamond is a great option.

4 . You can have peace of mind:

When you buy a lab grown diamond, you can have peace of mind knowing that your diamond is not associated with human rights abuses or environmental damage. You can also be confident that your diamond is unique and of the highest quality.

5. You can be a trendsetter:

By buying a lab grown diamond, you can be a trendsetter. Lab grown diamonds are the future of the diamond industry, and more and more people are starting to buy them. So, if you’re looking ahead of the curve, a lab grown diamond is a great option.

DIAMONDS 4Cs

What is diamond cut?

Diamond cut is determined by symmetry, proportion and polish. Diamond cutting is the process of turning a rough stone into a faceted one. More than any other factor, cut determines the beauty of the stone.

What diamond cut sparkles the most?
The round brilliant diamond, which has 57 to 58 facets, is the most brilliant of the diamond cuts. Cushion, oval, marquise, pear and heart-shaped diamonds are also cut using the brilliant faceting style and are similar to the round brilliant in degree of sparkle.

What is the difference between a diamond cut and a diamond shape?
It’s important to note that diamond cut and diamond shape are not the same thing. A diamond’s cut determines how its facets interact with light. A shape describes the geometric appearance of a diamond. Cut defines what the shape of a rough diamond will be not the other way around. This is why diamond shapes are often interchangeably referred to as cuts.

What is diamond colour?
Colour refers to the natural tint inherent in white diamonds. In nature, most white diamonds have a slight tint of yellow. The closer to being “colourless” a diamond is, the rarer it is. The industry standard for grading colour is to evaluate each stone against a master set and assign a letter grade from “D” (colourless) to “Z” (light yellow).

What's the best diamond colour?
Among white diamonds, D colour diamonds are of the highest grade. D colour diamonds are in the "colourless" range on a diamond colour scale along with E colour diamonds and F colour diamonds. Fancy colour diamonds such as yellow or pink diamonds have their own colour grades.

What is diamond clarity?

Diamond clarity is a measure of the purity and rarity of the stone, graded by the visibility of these characteristics under 10-power magnification. A stone is graded as flawless if, under 10-power magnification, no inclusions (internal flaws) and no blemishes (external imperfections) are visible.

What’s the best diamond clarity?
The best diamond clarity grade is FL, flawless.

What’s the difference between clarity and colour?
Diamond clarity is a measure of the purity and rarity of the stone, graded by the visibility of these characteristics under 10-power magnification. Diamond colour refers to the natural tint inherent in white diamonds.

Whats the difference between clarity and cut?
Diamond clarity is a measure of the purity and rarity of the stone, graded by the visibility of these characteristics under 10-power magnification. Diamond cut is determined by how a diamond’s facets interact with light and by symmetry, proportion and polish.
